EST

I hate Eastern Standard Time.  It sucks and it screws me up every year.  I don’t mind going to work in the dark.  I go there to sleep anyhow so I don’t see the problem.  When I come home, however, I want it to be light out!  I NEED it to be light out.

(typical winter)

You see, this isn’t a small thing to me.  I hate winter.  I grew up in the snow belt in PA off of Lake Erie.  We got tons of snow when I was a kid.  We played in the snow every day.  We skied and snowmobiled and wrote our names in the snow. We ate snow (never yellow snow), we drank snow…snow was our life.  When I was a kid, I enjoyed the snow.  But, despite what Emily says, I am an adult now.  I am so over snow and cold and winter.  There is just nothing at all good about it.

My people all try to say that I am a Northern boy and that I should embrace my inner Yeti.  Of course, I remind them that I spent the first year of my life in the South and the 20 after I left home in the South.  I am a Southern boy.  We like warm down here y’all…and we like sun and warm and sweet tea and warm.

(clearly the snow limited sunlight have made her crazy)

So, Eastern Standard Time, or EST as the abbreviators like to say, means the end of summer and light and heat to me.  It screws me up every year, but fear not…when we return to Eastern Daylight Time, or the Right Time as I like to call it, I will return to being civil and human and nice.

(a moment of weakness…me about to sled-ride…but see…it’s dark)

I guess I am not much of a Yeti any more…more like a warm-weather, shaved but still incredibly handsome BigFoot…

Anyhow, how does the time change effect you?  Do you like the evil Winter or do you prefer the magnificent Summer?  Have you ever seen Bigfoot?

  1. I live with the Big Foot(ed)
Our seasons are so subtle (read “Wimpy”) that the time change makes for a little interest… short days, slightly colder than August… we call it “Winter.”

  2. I certainly prefer summer. I am a southern girl of course. The heat just doesn’t bother me like some people. I like to play outside and there is just so much more to do when it’s warm. I guess the only thing good about winter is that spring comes right after it. I do enjoy playing in the snow. Once per winter is enough for me. When it is cold I usually just like to curl up and watch sports. I don’t like it getting dark so soon either. I can’t play outside when I get home :(. I guess I’ll just appreciate summer more when it gets here again.

  3. Oh, I am so the opposite. I don’t exactly like the get dark early part, but I never EVER adjust to Daylight Saving Time. I am tired all summer.

  4. Fun pictures. I’m looking forward to the snow… a few good ones, enough to do all that you mentioned. Met an older couple in the upper Michigan peninsula last year- they’ve lived there all their lives. They said if they don’t get 3-4 feet of snow they feel like they missed winter! Beats the ice and slush that we get…

  5. Don’t mind the snow if I don’t have to travel in it. Hate the short days. Hate the ice and wind but now I have all wheel drive. I’ll see how I feel about the winter weather now. I miss skiing. Haven’t had enough snow to cross country ski in several years. You have to bring the kids up in a big snow storm so they can have some fun in the snow.

  6. I grew up in AL and GA. I am really Southern! I consider this area to be Northern, although some might argue we ARE south of the Mason-Dixon line. Not far enough for my liking. DST is just another bee in my bonnet. I do love WV – it’s beautiful, but the snow…I could do without that part of it. 🙂

  7. I like it lighter in the a.m., better for walking, but hate the dark at 5:30.
We here in The Mitten also dread the onset of Old Man Winter. 5 or 6 months encased in coat and gloves is not appealing. I miss summer already.

  8. I like all the seasons-when one is almost over I’m ready for the next one to come. I wish I got at least one snow like that every year. Maybe you can come up with a way to send it down here : )
