Hahaha...that is exactly what I think of when I hear 'shrinkage' too. Guess that makes us equally as warped!

Love the hairdryer, you know you're a hick when that is your idea of a use for a beauty implement, Kim

I hope you get your fireplace fixed up, or at least strong enough to put a chimney liner inside, or a stainless liner and add a woodstove? We lost power for nearly 5 days a few years ago, and made stew on top of the woodstove. 'Course a Coleman stove worked well too :)

Don't feel bad. Our old farmhouse is lacking on insulation too. We have a couple portable heaters we use occassionally in addition to the wood stove.

We had a floor register for heat in our apartment as a kid. They used to find me sleep walking and sitting with a blanket on the register. Brings back warm memories of family.

My son loves to curl up in front of the space heater in the mornings, even though the house is a decent temp. I used to like to sit next to a floor vent and put a blanket over me and it and soak up the warm air!

I have a neat idea for your fireplace. Take a tunafish can and clean it well. Cut some cardboard strips to a height just below the rim and roll them up until they fit into the can snugly but not tight. Melt some parafin or bees wax and fill the can almost to the top of the cardboard. Let cool and harden completely. To light just set the cardboard on fire. This will burn for hours. To extinguish just place a larger can over the top. It can be reused until all of the wax and carboard is gone.
